mpk
Read something about this earlier that cylinder is the same as 1/4 and 1/4 is the same as half as it would be with lead ? As steel patterns a lot tighter than lead and obviously won't deform/compress like lead ..... Is there any truth in this ?
TJ91
Yes steel does pattern tighter and doesn't deform like lead, therefore lighter choked should be used.
super sharp shooter
Yep that sounds about right, that's what my manual says with my browning
TJ91
I wouldn't say 1/4 - 1/2 steel though. Every cartridge patterns different so they are not exact conversions If your looking at using steel just do some pattern tests, start with open/skeet then 1/4-cylinder and see which is best with each cartridge you try. super sharp shooter
3/4= full 1/2=3/4 1/4=1/2 skeet=1/4 cyl=1/4 From the manual
mpk
I will pattern my gun anyway but there obviously is some truth in it . Thanks for that
super sharp shooter
It will depend on the cartridges used so patterning will help you see what it is like as tj91 said
Guest cookoff013
steel is not choke friendly, and the slightest change, say 0.005" to 0.008" can cause the pattern to change from 1/2 to full. i can get an extra full choke pattern out of a 1/4 beretta mobil choke using homeload lead cartridges. some have even got modified choke patterns out of CYL chokes. steel is a different beast altogether. all these manuals are very vague, they are basicly guessing that steel patterns one restriction more! cartridges pattern, chokes dont !
