apache
Kennel cough is a syndrome rather than a specific disease, by this we describe the particular set of clinical signs in the dog as kennel cough. The most common cause is Bordetella bronciseptica (related to the bug that causes whooping cough in young children) but it can be caused by a host of other bacteria and some viruses. The kennel cough vaccines protect against the Bordetella and one of them also protects against the most common, influenza, virus (Nobivac KC). Antibiotics (in my experience) shorten the course of the disease, but will not stop the coughing straight away, obviously if your dog has a viral form they will do little (other than protect against secondary infection). Vets shouldn't officially recommend human cough medicine but all the ones you list are unlikely to do any harm and may give the dog some symptomatic relief. It is vital not to walk the dog on a collar or slip-lead, let it run free in a confined area or use a harness. It's mainly an infection of the trachea (windpipe) and anything pulling on the neck sets off an unpleasant bout of coughing. The kennel cough vaccine is usually seen as an 'extra' at booster time, but well worth doing! A days missed picking up or beating more than pays for it. It is very contageous and can be passed via you on your clothes to other people's dogs, so be careful where you go if you have been handling the dogs.
