SPEEDY
I went for a fox whistle on an 800ac property 1 minute down the road from my place this afternoon. I worked my way around the hillside stopping every 200m or so to have a squeal, I managed to call 2 foxes to within 80m or so but they stayed just out of shotgun range. I’m going to be happy when my little Remington fieldmaster .22 pump gets back from the shop then I will sort them cunning little ******* out. Anyway I stoped for a rest under a tree and had another squeal when I saw something react to the noise about 150m up the hill and as I watched I saw 3-4 goats get up and look my way, damn now I was wishing that I had bought my 260rem or at least some buckshot as the biggest rounds that I had on me were only 32gr N/o 2 shot. As they settled down again I decided to have a stalk as nothing else had gone right so far today I had nothing to loose, I made my way to about 60m from them with the wind in my face when I ran out of cover. I settled down to contemplate a new strategy when they got up and started walking up the hill and in my direction. I let them walk until they had just gone past my position and I stalked up towards them and when I got within 15-20m of them one big white Billie stoped to look in my direction as his mates were going through a fence. I decided that this was the only shot that I would get so I lined him up and fired, the shot brought him to his knees and as he started to rise I gave him the other barrel. So while I had a bad day on the foxes it all worked out for the best anyway but I will be glad to have my .22 back as it has been broken for nearly 2 years

SPEEDY
Good shooting Speedy. Personally, i would use a rifle, but each to their own. Where I hunt is in an area zoned Rural residential, which means that there are lots of 10-20ac hobby farms, surrounding it. But while it is still legal for me to use my 375H&H on the place, I have made a decision in the name of safety to only use shotguns on it. You never know who might be sneaking over the fence or where a ricochet might go, not to mention keeping the noise down so as not to stir up the greenies. But due to the rang that some foxes are sitting down and staring at me from, I am getting my .22 fixed and will use it as well. I have taken a few deer cleanly with a shotgun and buckshot before and heaps of pigs so I wasn’t overly concerned, at least not at that range but I would never have taken the shot if the range was much longer and I wouldn’t have fired at all if I didn’t have a good clean broadside shot. SPEEDY
What chokes do you have on the shotgun? The gun is a Rottweil model 90E it has fixed Imp Modified & Imp Full chokes, it throws quit tight pattens. I’m actually going to have it’s barrels cut back to 24” and a set of rifle sights fitted as I intend to use it as a buckshot and smooth bore slug gun for hunting Pigs. But I plan on replacing it with a nice old classic SXS in 12ga or 20ga, something light and fast handling for rabbits and foxes.
