electric/electronics question

A bit of expert help please. The motor on my pigeon magnet states 0.7 amps. So am I right in thinking it will theoretically last for ten hours on a 7amp battery? The second part of the question is will it use less current when it used at low revs with a controller?

The reason I ask is at present I'm humping around a 17amp battery and if I can get away with it, I would like to go to a lighter 7amp battery. I don't usally use it for that length of time, but 7 hours facililty would be good

Thanks in advance. T33

T33, I assume you mean you have a 7aH battery. It might seem picky, but it is important for the calculation to work.

7 aH is ampHour ie amps x hours, so you are right, in theory a 0.7amp load will last for 10 hours. This is very rough.

The second part depends on what type of controller you use. An electronic one (using pulse width modulation or PWM) works by reducing the current drawn by the motor so it will last longer. Some home made types just dump excess energy as heat in a resistor or similar so they will not extend the battery life or not as much.

Hope this helps. :good:

Yes I meant 7ah. Well spotted :good: I haven't bought one yet, before I did I wanted to check I wasn't going down the stupid route  Thanks for the help :good::good:

I would be surprised if it would last anywhere near 10 hours. It may do if you weren't then attaching arms with dead pigeons on - excess weight will drain battery.

A tip for people who keep dead birds for the magnet, is to debreast birds to save a bit of battery life.

I personally don't use a speed controller anymore. I also use nothing less than 20ah batteries - that way i KNOW they will last all day.

I dont use dead birds, it is light weight and has hypers on but i get your point.
