paddywack12
I have started to notice an odd noise when driving my Disco. When I slow down (take foot off accelerator) I can hear a strange noise cant really explain it but its like a constant whine or rubbing sound but stops as soon as I accelerate and speed up. Anyone got any ideas what this could be?
Dr_evil
Auto or manual ? I'd guess at prop shaft bearings
paddywack12
Manual, Are bearings expensive?
Dr_evil
Well that was only a guess, could be a wheel bearing, transfer box, diffs or anything in that running gear category Propshafts can be replaced for around £50 for the front ones, rear are slightly more Wheel bearing would be the cheapest fix
Dr_evil
Out of question are you sure the noise disappears when you speed up or does your engine just drown it out ? I'd be inclined to remove the wheel bearing option as that should really be a constant, the props being worn could still create that noise though as could the diffs if worn and pitted from **** getting in there Your worst case scenario is the t'fer box but it could simply be a worn input shaft
paddywack12
Noise definatly disappears when speeding up as the engine is really quiet. The whinning noise is louder than the engine.
Dr_evil
I'd test for the easiest then Give the props a shake in that case and see how much play there is, if theres a lot its most likely them on the way out and you don't want one to snap when you're cruising along at 70 If theres no excessive play then they can be rules out Can you locate the whining to the front or rear ? if its the rear you can eliminate the t'fer box and gears too Or if you can't locate it does the noise get worse after the disco's been run for a while ? in that case it would be a lubricated part Oh, and while you're checking the UJ check the donut Could be as simple as that, £20 fix in that case
mrwabbits
Noise definatly disappears when speeding up as the engine is really quiet. The whinning noise is louder than the engine. Sounds like either gearbox output shaft bearing or rear diff prop-flange bearing -- whines on the over-run. Check all oils levels 1st and for leaking seals. Top-up + retry. Check for lift-worn diff flange bearings. Drain and replenish with new oils (to the filler levels) in both axle diff casings and the gearbox and transfer box , check rubber doughnut on prop for splits /renew if required. Check all four wheel bearings for excess free play and rough worn bearing, often as not its the fronts that need attention. Check all propshaft UJ`s for excess play/wear + either renew if too worn or grease gun the nipples on uj`s if not worn anyway. (That so reminds me of a story once when Clad in overalls and my greasegun in hand,,-- well she did ask what it was for ) Failing else, I find leaving Mrs Wabbits at home works wonders  No noise whatsoever Up goes the stereo - - "pump up the volume" Edited December 12, 2011 by mrwabbits

paddywack12
Yes including fitting and VAT. Was told he could pick up a diff for around £100 and couple of hours labour plus the vat would be around £200. So does seem about right then
