Deako
We have lots of oats drilled in our area for the first time, but I'm not aware of pigeons eating them.Has anyone had any success shooting over oat drillings?
Cranfield
Deako, Oats is not a crop that is grown a lot in our area. When I have seen it drilled it doesn,t seem to get a lot of pigeon attention. When the fields have ripened, the pigeons definitely prefer laid wheat to laid oats. lazza
Same here I'm afraid! Oats don't attract many pigeon at all!! Good for rabbits though!

daystate64
Pigeons are not at all interested in Oat drillings. They much prefer to get onto the rape just after the Cleoptile stage, and on stubbles. Rabbits are not too keen either on Oats because the leaves are a bit hairy. This has been used to the farmers advantage because growers are now introducing cereal varieties that have hairy leaves which the bunnies hate thus keeping them from destroying thousands of hectares of crops nation wide, not so good for us shooters, but for us farmers yeah! :
lazza
Daystate64, Thanks for the info, lets hope the hairs don't spread to all the crops. Cheers
