Gimlet
You should get a new Howa for that money depending on spec. RWS Titan are somewhere around there too and well regarded by those who've got them. I assume they're available in .308. In your position I'd go second hand. You'd get a Mannlicher, Browning, Tikka, Remmy and a good many more. Or you could do what I did, buy a Parker-Hale for £270. People will look down their noses at it but if in good condition it will shoot every bit as well as any of the above and you'll have an extra £300 odd to spend on a scope. bedwards1966
If your happy buying second hand, you can certainly save a lot of money, they still shoot perfectly straight. That's my choice, mainly because I like spending less to get something just as good.
Alycidon
Norman Clarke in Rugby has ( or did have when I last went in just before Xmas) a Sako 75 in 308 for sale used at about £325. He has had it at least 6 months so I would think is open to offers. The stock is a bit tatty but as a working stalking rifle it will have not had a huge amount of rounds through it. Looks a good shootable rifle to me. If I was in the market for a 308 or something that uses that case that rifle would be my first choice given that if the caliber was not being changed it shot into say 1.5 moa. If you could find one you could do a lot worse that a BSA CFT, this was BSA's single shot target rifle, they have been seen a F class events, good tools but a bit heavy and single shot. njc110381
£325 is a bargain for a Sako 75! Assuming it shoots ok of course. Personally my favourite rifle at the moment is the Tikka 595. I've just picked one up in 7-08 and it's the best factory rifle I've ever had.
