pegasus bridge
well, my 'relaxed' cleaning routine with the hmr is catching up with me, the crown has got a very heavy build up of a hard carbon-type substance, the moderator is also full and now its grouping like a shotgun. (Its an ASE Utra - i have only cleaned it once before because it was such a pig to put back together) anyway - what chemicals can i use so i dont have to risk damaging the crown trying to remove this crud by scrubbing it? and hopefully making the ase utra easier to clean..? cheers gents. Silver-fox885
Do you remove the mod every time you finish shooting? If not that build up of carbon is probably concealing erosion and pitting on the crown which means recrowning the barrell. I bought a second hand .17hmr with an ASE Utra and that was what had happened to that one. Had to chop the thread off and recrown and rethread. Not a major problem. An old nylon toothbrush dipped in Hoppes No9, Parker Hale 009, Bisley bore cleaner or something like that. Will easily dissolve the carbon without damaging the threads or crown.
