Sandbank
By custom ear plugs, I am guessing you are looking for something that can be moulded to your ear. I must admit I have never had issues with cheapish disposables but realise some find these uncomfortable or ineffective. Important thing to note is that you should retain some audible frequency hearing, too high an attentuation may cause its own safety problems. At the 'posh' end ACS do some very clever 'sonic valve' plugs for shooting ... but at £100! Boots do BioEars Soft Silicone Earplugs, £5 for 3 pairs. I have tried these in the past, can be moulded to cut out the right level of noise and are modestly re-usable. Most of the time I use cheap Bilsom industrial disposables, fine for shotgun but would be unsuitable for the higher frequencies and dB from many rifles and pistols. MJN
at the top end of the market expect to pay £450 for a puretone cens device, a cheaper option can be done by your local hearing aid centre where they will make a moulded plug for your ears with no electronics. Iggy
I went though loads of different types of ear protection in the first 12 months of shooting and I dread to think how much money I spent. Then I went for some Emtec Noisebreakers (google them) and I've used nothing else since. They are moulded to your ears and use a sonic valve thingy so it cuts out loud noises but allows you to hear normal conversations etc. I think I paid about £70 all in and although they're maybe not as good as the moulded electronic types, they do a very similar job and are a lot cheaper. Good luck with your search!
