The Magpie

Tall, Dark and Proud,

He chakas out loud,

Waiting to pillage a nest.

Be it Blue *** or Robin,

His hunger for eggs throbbing,

A never ending terror for spring.

Hes smart and he knows it,

A creature of pure wit,

Surely nothing can stop him now.

He looks down below,

Oh look another crow!

And lands for a seemingly easy catch.

Somethings not right,

Bang! A Pellet enters flight,

And ends the plight of a terror.

His once big black wings,

Now mere static things,

As the Hunter collects his prize..

A Poem I wrote this morning. 23/06/06

Nah, I'm not a poet but for some reason I woke up this morning hearing the sounds of maggies outside. I just starting thinking of strings of words to do with them (had a mental brainstorm) and thought to write a poem about them. I have no idea why lol, I can't really explain it...it just happened....I sat and wrote it

Know just how you feel Andrew, I wake up to the raucous calling of magpies every morning and the words "where's my Daystate" always spring to mind.

We are absolutely inundated again this year and they are decimating the small bird population. We were watching a bunch of young sparrows quarelling in a bush in the back garden the other morning when a magpie swooped down and snatched one of the youngsters quick as blink. Never seen one take a young bird like that before, plenty nicking eggs and birds from the nest.

There is a bit of rough ground just behind wher I live and I'd ask the owner to let me put a larson trap there if I could borrow one from somebody. Anybody got one going spare at the mo ?

Recently saw a Maggie chase down and kill a young meadow pipit whilst it's parents tried to fend it off. I knew they took chicks from the nest, but, frankly this behaviour shocked me. To take fledged and flying young birds puts them in a whole new category of predator for me and I have pledged to myself to kill every maggie I legally can.
