bighit1985
Hi, looking at getting a section 1 license, just looking over the application forms and just want to make sure i understand it completely. So, referees fill in the back 4 pages, 2 pages each, on there it says they have to return them to the firearms department not the applicant, so I guess they send it in directly but will that delay the application??? and can I not send all paperwork together?? Does it matter?? Also looking at getting FAC shotgun and FAC Air, I know i put FAC shotgun down as multishot on the calibre section, but what about FAC Air how would I put that on the application?? This is a newbie question in general, what is classed as expanding ammunition and expanding missles??? Do i need to store the rifles in a seperate gun safe to shotguns or ammunition for the rifles??? I currently have a safe which has been passed for shotguns, but its not stamped with British Standard markings, will I have to get a different safe??? cheers

Air...just put air rifle and the calibre (not forgetting a moderator) Expanding is just as it says, ballistic tips or hollow points, just a term of reference, if you're shooting animals with rimfire you want expanding ammunition. The S1 shotgun should be treated as any S1 firearm, a seperate safe for rifle ammunition is a given, not sure about S1 shotguns and ammo, someone here will though Re your safe, on the application there is a tick box whether the safe is BS or not, if not, the FEO will take a look and make his/her judgement. Good luck.

So i need to get a seperate ammo safe, or another safe with a lockable compartment??? and then see what the FEO says about my current safe if I dont get a second one. Do i put expanding ammo seperate to normal ammo when it comes to the amount to be stored and bought??? cheers
bedwards1966
The idea of the referees sending their forms in themselves is so that they feel able to tell the truth about you if needed without you finding out. I.e if they feel you are a loose cannon that is unfit to have a blunt knife never mind a gun they have to be able to say so without you reading what they say. So as said give them a stamped addressed envelope. FAC air on the application should be OK, along with a moderator. Any ammunition designed to expand on impact is described as expanding ammunition, i.e soft point, hollow point, ballistic tip I think too. Don't forget to add a moderator for each rifle you apply for along with expanding ammo. The FAC ammunition has to be kept in a safe separate to the guns (or a cabinet with an additional locking part inside). You may have to get another cabinet for the FAC guns that conforms to 'British Standard', it will depend on your police force.
ordnance
All good advice. The only expanding ammo prohibited that i know of is ammo designed to be used in a handgun except poss for humane destruction. Whats we call a bullet is described in firearms legislation as a missile. Edited February 20, 2012 by ordnance
