ferguson_tom
did you socialise him with other dogs from a young age? My collie and now my springer pup go to puppy classes and and basic obedience training at a local dog club its really for pets rather than workers but it has been great to get them socialised and now they both are not particularly interested in other dogs unless i let them play. When i went i told the trainer the springer is a gun dog and there were certain bits i did not want to do and she was fine with that. The main thing is you have to be more interesting than another dog to him, with my collie i took him a lot later to the classes about 6 months and had the same problem you are having now, when out walking if i saw another dog i would make sure i have the ball or toy and play loads with him short catches etc before the other dog comes past, make a big fuss of mine and run past the other dog with lots of noise and making myself more interesting (yes other walkers thought i was mad) as soon as 10-15 yards past the other dog have a big play with mine loads and launch the ball so he has to really go for it to get it. He did of course stop a few times but soon realised other dogs were more boring than me playing, making noises and throwing the ball for him. Now after about 6 months he is not interested in other dogs until i stop and tell him he can play if i talk to the other owner. My springer is now 17 weeks and been going classes since 10 weeks, she will play with other dogs but she is so focused on me and knows i am more fun so will always recall and retrieve right past other dogs. ferguson_tom
Also how do you mean taught a lesson? by punishing him for playing with other dogs all you will do is reinforce the fact that other dogs are more fun and interesting than you punishing him when he sees one. Also if goes too far he might not want to be around other dogs full stop as he will learn he gets punished when around them.
arwen3513
Agree with F_T. be more fun, if not then try and call him in and pop his lead on. most working dogs soon realise that work is what they love and when cast off become oblivious to all other dogs. and get on with the job. jan

ferguson_tom
I know what you mean how they can be frustrating but if he works well and you have spent so much time on him this should be quite an easy fix i reckon. My springer is my second dog, my collie is about a year older and everything i did wrong with him i have now rectified with the springer and she is coming on a lot better. When you go over to this field or take him out is all you do work? Maybe just take him for a walk where he meets other dogs or picks up there scent he will soon realise they are quite boring but if you have always stopped him from playing with other dogs he still thinks it could be something really interesting. I would just relax about it for a while and let him get on with it as long as he is still in control while doing it with recalls so you can get him back then i would just make sure as previously mentioned you are more fun than the thought of another dog. As said she is only my second dog and there are people on here with a lot more experience who could say i am completely wrong but doing this has worked for mine Best of luck mate and hope you get him to the level you want he sounds a great dog Edited February 28, 2012 by ferguson_tom
