Salizar
Hi all, Would a fac slot for a .17 Remington, cover a .17 Remington Fireball instead, or would I need a variation or swop? John
CharlieT
It would need a variation. I have a fireball slot and can't buy a rem I have seen.
Dave-G
It wouldn't hurt to ask the FEO if he's tolerant on the issue or willing to change it to 17cal.
JonathanL
I suppose this is one of those things where specific wording becomes important. Does the slot simply say '.17 Remington'? If so then, on the one hand, it could be argued that you can only acquire a rifle chambered in .17 Remington. Then again would you actually break the law by acquiring a .17 Remington Fireball? I'm not sure that you would. If the slot said .'17 Remington Fireball' then that is all you could buy. If the slot simply said .17 rifle then you could quite happily purchase any .17 cal rifle you pleased. It's one of those issues where micro-management by a few jobsworths had become totally out of hand. Firearms law is there (we are told) purely to ensure the public safety. There is no conceivable public safety issue as to whether someone has a .17 Remington or a .17 Remington Fireball - none what-so-ever. J. Another slot is for '.17 mach2' vermin and pest control. Just seems strange that you cannot put say '.17 CF' and '.17 RF' respectively. John. They can word it pretty much how they like as there is no strict legal requirement to specify things as pedantically as down to the specific chambering. There is no reason, for instance, as to why they cannot simply put down 'any centre-fire rifle up to .223'. If you were a deer stalker then there should be no problem specifying something like 'any rifle suitable for the lawful shooting of Roe/Red/Sika deer'. There is no public safety related reason as to why they need to specify things any more narrowly than that. I always tried to ask for things leaving as much lee-way as possible. I have three .22 rifles and none of them were ever specified by action type or even ignition type when I applied for them. I have two .22 bolt action rifles one of which is a .22lr and the other a .22 Hornet and I've had them both for years and years and the slots they are on just say .22 rifle. J.
