hutchie the white hunter
Flocked pigeon decoys are best!, and around 6 full body and 12 shells will get you started then make sure all the decoys are facing the wind and with a kill zone ie in a C,J,W,V, formation shape so the birds have plenty space and no obstructions in there way to land,ie bouncers or magnets! Put bouncers to the sides of the pattern as if birds are landing or far out as if they are coming in, anywhere from 45 to 100 yds away as sometimes if they are too close to the kill zone they can spook birds wanting to commit this all depends on how the birds are flying and the wind speed ,also sometimes the magnet will draw birds in from great distances but spook them as they come to land if this is so then move the magnet away from the kill zone this is what i do and get a few birds and it works for me But every day is different and every field is not the same so with practice and field craft will come perfection ,ALSO MAKE SURE U DONOT BOB YOUR HEAD ABOUT USE YOUR EYES AND KEEP STILL ,and a good hide makes a good day
Cosd
Have a look at Nickbeardo's tips and tricks section for decoy patterns, and try to understand how each pattern works Get in touch with Deny Essex and ask him to email you a copy of a paper he wrote for beginners, that's full of useful information. Regards decoys you will get different views on what people like. My tip is think about transporting them to the hide spot. I personally won't use full body because of the weight and amount of space required to carry them. Flock coated shells are excellent and they stack as well so a dozen of these take up about the same space as three full body decoys. Though I still have these I now use the FUDs as these take up even less space and weigh very little. Numbers wise, you need less in the summer than you do in the winter, I would start with 12 for now and get another 12 when you can for the winter. Hope this helps Cos

The Essex Hunter
cheers for the info lads Flocked decoys wont shine if they get wet, I would use the half shells and put dead birds out in the pattern as you go, a sharp stick in the throat to prop up the bird (kebab sticks work well) The full bodied decoys are expensive and bulky, as above the dead birds will replace that pursuance, and let’s face it pigeons are what you are trying to shoot! Regarding patterns….pigeons do not feed in A-Z patterns they feed randomly! So set your decoys in a random manor however leave a decent area for the birds coming in to feed, kill them and add to your pattern. Movement in the hide will cause you the most problems as a pigeon will turn from half a mile to come and join a feeding flock if it looks right, so I am sure it will see you doing an impression of Zebedee……from 40 yds… Just out of intrest are you using a shot gun?
