bigcatdad
Sorry for the loss of life for Andrew Morton. I didnot hear about this in the US. They sell air rifles here to anybody over 18 with no safety test or safety card. They do have accidents. I met a friend online who lives in the Republic of Ireland. He seemed like a good lad, and he's over the age of 18. He asked me if I would send him an air rifle. I know there are restrictions there. After I looked into it further, I realized it would be a great expense to the lad to receive an air rifle from me. He would need to buy a safe and get a background check from the local police. It is sad to say that I was not able to fulfill his wish. I 've been target practicing now for 50 years. What I find is that young adults who train early with air rifles usually become fairly good shots before they enter the military. My oldest son was trained in this manner. When it came time to serve his country, he did 3 years in Iraq. Part of his duty was to fend off suicide boats from attacking his shipmates. He told me he could easily shoot these people but because of his skill wilth his rifle, he was able to shoot over their heads without the loss of life. You have to weigh out your pros and cons, but dont sell your youth short, because someday, it might be your son or daughter defending his or her mates. I know this is a sensitive issue and I dont want to say the wrong thing. thank you.

I don't think they'll ever go to the lengths of banning air rifles here, but they may well force one to have a license and a background check. This will make it far harder - and more expensive - to bring new blood into the sport. The problem isn't one of age, it's one of education. a teenager who's been taught by someone properly is a far safer prospect than someone who's never been taught and is blasting away in a mentality of hit and hope, spray and pray mentality. There are accidents here, as anywhere with anything, but the solution isn't ban it it's to look and see if you can make it safer with reasonable methods: banning air rifles isn't reasonable! Which part of the states are you living in mate?
