demonwolf444
Done allot of pigeons but only ever shot one rabbit with the XS78 i bought last year, so for those interested heres where im at with it. Its a great gun, when im bored i find myself finding a modification to do. One problem, if i dont use it for aaages the seals dry out and you have to take the whole thing appart to get it to seal again, but you get pretty quick at stripping it down its just a FAF. One tip is to buy BULK orders of Co2, save allot of money if you buy 100 plus at a time from the internet. Setup - SMK sx78 with a polished bolt and probe ( makes cocking smoother ) and a drilled out probe port, increases flow or co2 and therefore power. Finely adjusted trigger. Unknown very old very effective silencer designed for a .22 air rifle ( push on ) Nikko Sterling mountmaster 3-9x50 AO. Problem with co2 is temerature - for consistant shooting you have to wait between shots a short period or the cooling effect of the CO2 results in fluctuations in power and therefore accuracy becomes questionable in extreme circum stances. With the boiling weather i filled up with co2 and head out in the evening after checking zero and lay up on the first rabbit i saw, lay down and used the AO to range it, 30-40 yards held dead on, exhale thuk, my elcheapo (yet surprisingly good marksman pellet smacked home, i find the poor lead quality makes them mushroom quickly on impact instead of zipping straight through as i found with the first rabbit i ever shot about a week after i got it) smacked home, resulting in an instant kill, the shot placement was just behind the eye which was ok. i walked allong through the field and got to the second field, a big grass grazing field, brimming with half grown and bunnies, i set up on the gate and looked around me for any in range and finally saw one at about 40 yards thud, and it went down. not seeing anymore within range i climed the gate, using the lofty position to look for the next potential targets, stalking forward 40 yards i came about 25 yards within two half grown rabbits which ran just as i came to them. I looked around and saw four bunnies at 45 yards, although they looked closer, i ranged them and held half a mildot over and took the closest and biggest, the others sat by separate mouths of the holes and after some time i took them all off however they fell and kicked into the hole which was both annoying and inconvenient, after stalking the rest of the field with no luck i returned to pick up and could only find one of the four bunnies, however i could see them stuck down their respective holes. i reached into the one hole that was big enough for me to get my arm in and could almost grab the bunny but just couldnt get a grip :( so finished the bag with three picked for six shot, the smallest of which went for ferret food, the other two being preped, and skins being tanned. i do like the XS it is like shooting a non recoiling springer, would be nice to have PCP accuracy, but that comes at a price, and due to the co2 power source. Sharpshooter.123
Great read! One thing I will say, I had 3 co2 guns and if you sit and work the ££ out you can use a pcp cheaper. It's just the money for the rifle or go onto fac 22lr and over quadruple your bags
secretagentmole
There are ways and means of converting the 78 to hpa (high pressure air)! Nice write up!
demonwolf444
Thanks guys, going out this evening, dont know whether or not to go to the same spot or go to a permission i have a few miles away - will take my phone so i can take some pictures. PCP is soo much cheaper, and to be honest if i hadnt bought this gun, numerous cheap scopes which had a limited lifespan under the stress of my springers(not mentioning any names (SMK!!) i would probably beable to afford one, however being 17 whenever i want an air rifle one of my parents have to be the ones that buy it and they technically own it. So the whole palava of dragging my mum to a gunshop, which is far too tedious for her, just makes it difficult to get hold of one unless a second hand one at an alright price crops up nearby. so ive been making do with what i have, which while a bit rough around the edges, gets the job done. As for HPA conversions, it doesnt seem worth it, the gun doesnt have the right balance of ergonomics for the extra weight and i not confident enough to make the conversion, and AFAIK i would have to run it at a relatively low pressure because of the quality of the steel ? (correct me if im wrong). Always looking for a PCP, but except a theoben (i think) that turned up a while ago on here for 180 i dont think i can afford one, with all the charging equipment, the price usally extends to what i payed for my shotgun. Thanks guys
secretagentmole
The steel gets replaced with a regulated air bottle, so it is always at constant pressure that does not wreck the gun. The Chinese Airgun Forum is the place to find out more about conversions!
