casts_by_fly
Hi guys, Pursuant to my previous threads, I think I've made some headway with my wife on a second car. She's gotten a promotion and I'm in line for one, so the extra cost might not be such a problem. I'm thinking a Jimny would suit what I want really well (a 4 door removable hard top Jeep would be better though) so I've been watching the second hard sales sites. My question is, how many miles is starting to get to 'a lot' for an autobox jimny? I tend to use 100k as a critical limit when I'm looking at japanese cars. Things start to wear around that point in a decent vehicle. Is that true for the jimny? I thought since they are a bit 'spartan' that reliability might be a bit higher. I only need it for about 10k miles over the next 2 years, so not a ton. That's why I'm considerig higher mileage ones. I don't need an imaculate 57 plate with 20k on the clock (though it would be nice). A W-reg with 90k in good mechanical shape would be about perfect I think. Is that a sound approach in this case for a jimny? Thanks, Rick
steyrman
Dont know about the auto box but the manual along with the engines are bullet proof mate
bedwards1966
At that mileage I wouldn't expect any issues. Really it comes down to how well it's been maintained, a car with 200k that's been serviced properly tends to give far less trouble than one at 60k that's never seen any maintenance. Auto boxes tend to be OK provided they haven't been harshly abused and have clean(ish) oil in them. Basically just check the vehicle well before buying it, for your mileages you aren't likely to wear much out.

I've never been within 20 foot of a Jimny but most auto box's are pushing it at much over 80k, you might get lucky and get 150k out of it or get a bill for £1000+ at 85K. Don't rely on oil condition but looking at the oil on the dip stick. If your lucky someone may have changed the trans oil and filter.
