Mixed bag and the fright of my life!

Went out again this morning to have another crack at the squizzers, got to the hide just before light and slipped in. The first thing to appear was a jay, it landed, took a nut and was off before i could even think about mounting the gun. After half an hour a squirrel hopped up on to the log, i got myself into position and just as i squeezed the trigger the jay came back, spooked the squirrel and I totally missed. I gave it another hour, two squizzers made an apperance but they have got crafty and were going up the back of the log and pinching the nuts without offering me a shot. I decided it was time to go for a walk to see if i could find a couple of pigeon, I was in luck as in the first field i went to there were 10 feeding on the clover the closest being 50 yards i got the cross hairs on it and it was in the bag, its mates failed to notice what had happened so i had another in the bag in no time. I carried on with my walk, not seeing much until I was nearly back to the hide where i had a crow off one of the freshly cut fields at 57 yards. When I got back to the baited area all of the nuts had gone from my log and I had only been an hour! Frustrated I thought I would give it a go in the hide for the last 45 minutes, nothing happened for 40 minutes but just as i was about to pack up I noticed a jay making its way toward me, I readied the gun and as it landed I was ready, this time it was in the bag!!

Just after I had taken this picture I was heading back to the car looking at my phone when i stood on something that didnt feel right then there was a wack on my boot, I looked down to see a snake about three and a half foot long!!! I ******* **** my pants!! Jumped back screaming (the last snake i saw was a king brown comming at me in Australia!!) I then composed myself and took a proper look and identified it as a grass snake! I am so glad there was no one to see me!! Nice to see them about, its been years since i saw one that big!

Cracking write up, sounds a good session, I love seeing snakes (although wish my wife didn't keep them, we have two Royal Pythons) we get quite a few Adders around this area. A grass snake normally would roll over and play dead covering itself in it's excrement, are you sure it wasn't an Adder, Grass snakes get pretty long too, up to 6ft where an Adder is more likely to be about 3ft and Dry Strike in defence... The grass snake almost always found near water as they almost exclusively on amphibians.

Not disbelieving you though just unusual for a grass snake to bite or attempt to bite :) Still great to see though if not in a panicked mode :) :)

For a while I worked out in Namibia; the number of volunteers that ran out of a shed screaming there was a black mamba in the barns, only to discover a slightly less dangerous bicycle tyre lurking there! fun and games! nice to see a grass snake though: summer is definitely here!
