jimmyvonk
Yep, sounds like the Reg/Rec unit - put a multimeter over the battery terminals - probably a lot more V than it should be - otherwise it could be a short to earth. (nipped wire / bulb failure)
yankeedoodlepigeon
he was told to replace that last time he was having trouble with it so it should be a new unit in there
Fisherman Mike
he was told to replace that last time he was having trouble with it so it should be a new unit in there Thanks, First of all apologies for putting this in the wrong section. The dealer tested the Reg/Rect last time and said it was ok...short would perhaps be the favorite..I will have a good look at the wiring loom tonight and get the local bike shop to check it over. Thanks again.
jimmyvonk
Short sounds more likely - check where the loom goes round the headstock and the condition of all bulbs. BUT - golden rule of motorcycle electrics (work of the devil) just because the reg/rec was tested recently and was not the problem then - no reason to say it isn't now. worth checking the outputs with a multimeter again. My Enfield went through a spate of eating reg/rec units... and then suddenly stopped and went on to a new niggle... Check your charge circuit output, turn everything off, then turn things on one by one, see if anything blows the fuse. Lights, flashers, horn etc etc.

Fisherman Mike
Mike, I have a copy of the "motorcycle electrical techbook" you can borrow if you like? Thanks dave, it needs a service anyway so ive booked it in with Hammonds Cirencester and asked them to take a gander. The RAC came out last week after the throttle cable broke going up Cowcombe Hill so im wondering if they might have perhaps pinched something up when they re threaded it around the head loom?? I would do the maintenance myself but dont have the testing kit or tools these days ( flogged them all to pay for a a new gun ) You off this week or just bored at work  Edited June 7, 2012 by Fisherman Mike
