ziplex
I have found and dusted down an old and never used Shimano Beast master 210ML boat rod. It states C.W. 10-120g MAX on the blank. I am guessing it is a little 6lb class rod but this 'CW' or casting weight is confusing! Anyone
Drayman
I've always understood the CW range to mean that the lower number is the minimum CW to make the rod act correctly when casting - anything lighter and it won't bend enough - and the upper CW weight is the maximum weight to avoid damage to the rod when it's compressed during casting. Apparently there's a rule of thumb guide of 1oz CW per pound of test curve. This would put yours at about 4lb.

That sounds feasible, don't quite get the 'casting' (CW) bit though as it's a conventional down tide boat rod, or so I thought...wouldn't be able to 'cast' 10g very well with it. The tip is very supple but I doubt 10g would hardly load it. Likewise 120g would overload the blank if you attempted a cast with that weight, the rod is way too soft for that. Why can't they just stamp 4lb or 6lb somewhere on it....would be a lot simpler Edited June 9, 2012 by ziplex
beretta
i thought the beastmaster range were spinning/lure rods, hence the 'casting weight' on them, but thats a big weight range for one.
pimpkiller
CW or casting weight is a measurement of the recommended range of lure weight/ bait you can cast. I actualy prefer it to test curve. It usually refers to spinning rods as that method is all about chucking lures about constantly, you couldn't chuck out a house brick with a piece of spaghetti or chuck out a feather with a snooker cue. Agreed, loads of rods sat here from various boat rods, fly rods, beach casters, spinning rods etc.....all sorts. Their stated range or casting weight all make sense but this one doesn't. Possibly it's a mis-print on the blank? maybe I bought it cheap because of that? I can't even remember where I got it from. Either way 10-120g can't relate purely to a casting weight can it? pimpkiller
Its hard to say without seeing the rod, is it an old one or foreign? they have done some weird specialist beastmaster rods in the past for weird fishing techniques. 10-120g is a very strange range, id imagine it has a very delicate tip then quickly gets stiff and beefy. You're right PK..........very supple tip and plenty of backbone lower down, few pic's added now. Head's gone a bit but from memory I must have bought it about 6 years ago as that was when I had my last boat..never got used though, might of bought it for Plaice possibly? must of had a light line use in mind at the time. pimpkiller
That actualy looks like a "spinning" rod to me and the fact it says ML (medium/light action) is definitely a spinning rod thing. Perhaps its simply a spinning rod to take on a boat, its pretty short so it might be a special "boat" version or maybe a light vertical boat jigging rod. looking at the fact it has a sensitive tip but lots of beef perhaps it a sort of bass spinning rod for chucking out a biggish lure but the light tip stops hook pulls, The thing is it dosnt matter what it is just give it a bash
