NickS
My son is 14 and a SGC holder. His guns are on mine and we usually shoot together. If I am not available, can a non-certificate holder take him to a shoot since the guns are in his charge (technically having been loaned to him by me I guess)? For a bonus mark, can they take him to buy cartridges? My guess at this is that they cannot since they can oly be sold to a certificate holder and you cannot sell to anyone under 18 (not sure if this includes being supervised by an adult). Coolhead
The law does not require an adult (over 21) supervisor to be a certificate holder but I think the police would be very unhappy about it. The law allows for a non-holder adult to buy carts on behalf of a cert holder with written authority but again the police would be very unhappy and I doubt an RFD would be comfortable doing it. WelshLamb
As long as he has his own cert I can't see why someone else can't drive him to a shoot
Scully
Under 15 any adult over 21 can accompany him, regardless of whether they have SGC or not. No-one without SGC may buy cartridges as far as I know, and neither can a SGC holder of under 18......I think!
NickS
Thanks for the replies. Coolhead, you raise an interesting issue about how you can comply with the law yet the police/FEO being unhappy about it. It is entirely reasonable for them to get upset if the law is broken but if it hasn't? I guess it may be worth a phone call to the firearms department. Administering licensing is secondary. The law gives them so much discretion that their being unhappy is a very big deal even without specific statutes to follow. It's always better to be as co-operative as is reasonable. Un-vetted adults supervising children with guns is legal but you can see it from their point of view. As for purchasing carts, well to put it simply, Section 1 laws are to keep the tabloids off the government's back, Section 2 is to keep the House of Lords of their backs. What is one of the favorite pastimes of the titled ? With regards to purchasing carts; Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988; Section 5 c; {A person may not, unless they} Produces a certificate authorising another person to possess such a gun, together with that person’s written authority to purchase the ammunition on his behalf. So again legal but likely to result in a very high pucker factor for the Police.
