ack-ack
Finally found a nice second hand tdi for rumbling up and down the m-way and the chuffing things started smoking a bit. Popped the bonnet and the big (approx 50mm) air hose has come off the turbo and theres fresh oil on the offside of the engine and alternator. Checked the dip stick and the oil level is 7mm higher than max. It has had no thrash from me apart from during the test drive when I was doing my best to get it smoking. Its done 140k, drives like a new car and still has rakes of power. Any ideas folks?
Livefast123
If the oil is higher than normal (7mm is a lot above maximum) then sometimes the oil enters the breather system and gets back into the turbo that way or your turbo oil seals are on their way out. When you overfill the oil it can result in an over pressure in the crankcase which results in oil and oil vapour being sucked into the breather system. Worn oil seals will let oil leak into the turbo. Either is not good news and can result in a runaway diesel that will run on it's own oil until it blows up. If this happens place it in 5/6th and drop the clutch to stall the engine. Personally I would be draining the excess out asap. Livefast123
Depends if it's damaged the seals or if it was just being sucked through the breather system. I would get the oil to the proper level then take it out for a spin to get it nice and hot to burn off any residue, then get somebody to travel behind you, give it some stick and see if a medium / large amount of blue smoke comes out the back, if so then there is oil burning and something is amiss. Hopefully it should be fine, it's not the worst overfill I have seen by far!

I used to have an old Audi 80 that my brother used to call the squid. At the lights even with only moderate throttle the blessed thing used to chuff out so much smoke that you could hardly see anything behind for a few seconds. Livefast123
Thing is there are so many things on a modern diesel that can cause smoke like injectors and MAF sensors, thats why I stick to petrols these days and sod the extra 10 Mpg. If it's black smoke then generally it's fuel related and blue is oil burning.

I could get this from my 1.8 turbo petrol golf. I was expecting 55mpg easy. Thats what every body said they were getting from theirs. Tsk!!!!
