jmooney
Coming from the other side of the pond all the shooting we do is roughshooting and it seems to me from hanging around here long as I have that the roughshooter's dog of choice in the UK and Ireland is either a springer or cocker for the most part. I'd like to hear from anyone who uses a Lab for a roughshooting dog instead of a spaniel and find out what your experiences are or if you know of any lines (UK/Ireland) that are bred more for roughshooting than strictly retrieving. I'm thinking that a lab will be my next dog and I'll be looking for a breeder that imports or breeds from UK/Irish lines because I like the temperament and personality that your Labs are bred for much more than what I can find over here, hence the asking for recommendations of certain lines. Pictures always welcome as well as stories. Best, Jim
The Croc
My mate hunts with a Lab, she thinks she's a Spaniel, will hunt thick cover just like a Spaniel. Only problem is when we go Fowling, she doesn't like sitting still like a normal Lab, and whines a fair bit being sat and not Hunting Couldn't reccomend a a kennel, but there's a few British kennels your side of the pond Have a look on here. http://www.retrievertraining.net/forums/ I think my next dog will be a Lab Brian

kent
If you stick to working lines its just how you bring them up IMO. They say i lab will enter cover if it knows there is something there while a spaniel will go in on the offchance, suppose you just have to get them to think there is something in every bush then! Personally i should look for a fair bit of picking up dogs on the female side of the pedigree and strong trialing lines on the male
