colin99
I'd just thought I would post to say hello. i love your board My name is colin and I'm new to this sport but have been interested for many years. I have had a keen interest in shooting, airguns and stuff for many years but was prevented from buying one by my mother until i moved away from home. up to now my experience of shooting is limited to shooting my friends rifle and gat pistol at the local wasteground but i have just moved to my own bedsit and will be buying a rifle for myself very soon. can anyone give me a tip on what would be a good rifle for me to buy as a news hooter? i will be using it for paper targets and of course pigeons and hopefully rabbits and other small animals as i am friendly with a local farmer. he has said that when i am more experienced that maybe i will be able to go out with him and shoot his shot gun and help him control vermin which is really good news for me i have only got a small amount of money saved up due to my job being not that well paid so if you could let me know about cheap rifles that have still got good power and that it would be really nice of you guys. thanks colin ps oh and sites would be good to <= me hahahaha

yaloopy the pigeon watcher
Welcome, I'm not sure, but I think as long as its under 3 feet you can kill it. Don't take my word for it, I might be wrong. yaloopythepigeonwatcher
neil
Please dont shoot anything under 3 feet long There is a list of quarry that can be legally shot here, http://www.basc.org.uk/upload/tplt_pri_sty...page=2100002164 look for the pest species on that page, and basically that is your list of things you can shoot aslong as the farmer wants them shot. Before you try this you must first practice your marksmanship to ensure clean kills. The best advice about buying an air rifle is really to go to a few gunshops and have a look at a few and see what suits you (and your pocket)best, there are loads of good quality air guns at the moment that are up to the legal limit and are a good price, buy a well known name not a cheap unheard of thing anything by Webley, bsa, air arms, weihrauch etc will be fine, any good gunshop will be able to kit you out if you tell them what you want to do with it and how much money you have to spend
Teal
For an airifle, the recommend species which you can shoot comfortably with an airifle would be rabbits, (grey) squirrels, all the corvids (magpies, crows, rooks jackdaws etc..), and woodpigeon, and of course rats if you've got any, but be careful as they have tons of diseases oh and also feral pigeons, treat them with the same contempt as rats as some are very diseased. madshitbrain
That good advice. When I was at home my father made me practice marksmanship very carefully until I could consistently group my shots in tight group at 60 to 100 yards. Back home I use .22 rimfire gun but here I find I need firearms certificate so I buy air rifle but nevertheless although I only work at ranges up to 30 yds now I still make sure I can fire good groups. It important to do this and know anatomy of your prey so you can get good clean kill and never take shot where you unsure of this.
colin99
wow you guys don't hang about!! thanks for the advice it is a great help!! Steve my farmer friend said that it is ok for me to shoot anything on his farm within reason. odviously i'm not gonna shoot his cows and that thanks for the website neil i will make sure i study it and i am going to practice my shooting in steves barn for a while before i try and shoot animals. i would hate to just injure one and not kill it all the way that is why i'm going to get a good site for my gun too as this will help me make clean kills on whatever i shoot there are lots of rats in steves barn i could shoot and also he has birds that land in his lower field so i will be shooting them probably most of the time anyway my cousin has given me loads of cardboard targets (the ring type and some with the shape of a squirrel ) so i'm gonna shoot them. i'm gonna go to the gun shop on monday when i get paid and see if they can give me advice on what to get thanks colin Mad****brain B)

colin99
thats ok yappy i was going to check anyway because there are lots of things under three feet and i wouldn't want to shoot them. cats and dogs and that B) i'm going to the gun shop tomorrow in my lunch hour i'll ask them for a good price for a rifle, site, bag and pellets. i'll get them to put it away for me behind the counter I'll have to have a half day from work to buy the rifle though because my boss has said that it isn't a good idea to have a gun in a supermarket because i am out in the car park most of the time i couldn't look after it. thinking about it do you think i should get a lockable cupboard in my bed sit for my gun? there are about 15 people living there and some are a bit odd i want to be a responsible shooter and make sure that i take as much care as i can. i was at steves farm today and he told me about lamping rabbits. is this a good way to shoot them? i suppose i would need a strong torch for that! thanks colin
