Help required with my ameteur gun smithing mistake

I am hoping someone can help...

I have just restored the stock on my English boxlock and it now looks great.

I have just taken it out of the cabinet as was thinking of having a wander around with it this evening and chucked a couple of snap caps in it and pulled both triggers. Then I found it will not open - the top lever does not disengage the barrels.

I have dismantled it and it is clear what the problem is - the triggers are not re-setting and so the auto safety cannot re-engage which is stopping the top lever from opening the gun.

If I hold the triggers forward I.e. to the cocked position then I can open the gun, if I don't, the safety doesn't re-engage and I can't open it.

Presumably the springs which re-set the triggers are the problem - can anyone offer and advise and tell me I have not ******** it in my eagerness to make it look nice!

Thanks in advance.

Anthony

Ps. Sorry cannot correct typo in title

Not the easiest one to sort out based on a written description of the problem and the fact that English guns vary in design from one maker to another. But would suspect Blunderbust is on the right track. A lot, but not all of English guns use an `L` shaped lever to re-set the auto-safe when the top lever is moved to the right. This lever has an elongated hole and it sits in the top of the trigger plate. The top of the vertical leg of this lever must engage the slot in the safety when you put the trigger plate back on. If you manage to assemble the trigger plate so that the top of this lever is in front of the safety catch it will mean that the lever cannot move the safety because its already in its rearmost position. This will mean the top lever will not be able to rotate.

I have taken some pics to help...

Shows with the safety engaged, the lump for want of a better word sits above the trigger and prevents it from being pulled. When th top lever is pulled, th block on the left moved out and pushes the safety mechanism back into this position (well it should).

This picture shows the problem

Once the safety is off, the trigger mechanism is in the way and prevents the block from pushing the safety back over the top of the trigger and re-setting the switch to safe.

If I pull the triggers forwards then they move out of the way downwards and the safety can be reset - so I am pretty sure the lever is seated correctly on the safety catch, but the triggers are not moving out of the way to allow the safety to be re-set so when the gun is assembled and closed I cannot open it without holding the trigger forward.

I am sure this can be fixed, but not sure how to start!
