fraudulent whiplash claims

I've no problem with people making a claim if they have suffered a genuine injury or financial loss as a result of someone else.

But the ambulance chasers who phone up with the intention of convincing you that you are injured, I'd be tempted to get all their details and then inform them you intend to report them for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. Probably put an end to any further pestering.

The worst case of claiming falsely was one I have recounted before of a bus in Northern Ireland involved in an accident some years ago with 3 passengers aboard. The number of claims for injury was over 20. The majority had obviously made it up or been so upset by the sight of the crash they felt 'injured.

The major problem is that the legal system is so expensive the ambulance chasers just pay out to avoid going to court then play the same trick on someone else to get their money back. The people who really lose out are the genuinely injured, solicitors are not willing to fight for whats right because they want to avoid going to court. The thing with a genuine "whiplash" type injury is that you may very well be crippled for life but you dont find that out until years later. Im still crippled from a "whiplash" type industrial accident over 10 years ago.

Watch Claimed and Shamed on the BBC all next week during the morning - it's all about insurance fraud and the heigtened ability of the industry to detect it and the criminal consequences of it through their specialist police unit.

It's an epidemic and according the ABI, their body, the industry detected fraud to the value of £989m in 2011 with the majority of this coming from fraudulent motor claims.

Not sure about the accuracy of the £90 uplift in premiums claimed on this site as the programme refers to £50.
