A Couple More Vixens

I went out at 6pm this evening to sit in a hide overlooking a clear fell on a hill side that I've not spent much time on but have been baiting for a few days. It joins the main wood containing 4 pens and has plenty of cover crop on the field above so I figured there was a good chance I'd see something. I'd spotted a fox up in the area but from the other side a couple of nights ago but it ran as soon as I lit it up.

As the darkness came in I got three seperate glimpses of foxes, possibly the same animal. Each time it ran as soon as the light was on it - even though I was using a relatively low power torch and at around 100yds.

After an hour or so I tried using different calls to see if anything would respond. Firstly a Best Fox Call (tenterfield type) which brought one but it didn't like the lamp. I stuck with a widgeon call for 5 minutes or so and that's when the first, a young vixen, came bounding in from the top of the hill. I took the shot on the NV while it was still coming towards me and at approx 30 yds. This definately wasn't the shy fox I'd been seeing but the colourings matched the animal on the trailcam in my latest thread in the videos section.

After sticking with the widgeon call, trying the Best Fox Call and using my hand, all to no avail, I started playing a fox calling on my Iphone. After a few minutes I had another set of eyes near the top of the clear fell. Popping the NV on and giving a quick squeak to stop it I dropped it at around 100yds. The second was alot older, possibly 3-4 years old and hopefully the very twitchy one I'd seen a few times.

Younger fox at the top.Note the pale spots on the older animal which seem to feature regularly round here.

Until next time,

Greg.
