Thunderbird
After my four-and-a-half year old son drew a pretty good crowd at a food fair recently whilst skinning a rabbit, I've come home with a few ducks and pheasant today. He's got stuck straight into the ducks (whilst mum watches TV in another room it must be said) tonight - we'll do the pheasant tomorrow or Tuesday. He's totally unfazed and also likes the meat. I usually do pigeon or duck fried medium-rare, and often in a little mix of Thai sweet chilli and Maggi sauce, seems to work well and he likes it. He's a bit bloodthirsty when we're butchering the quarry (which I suppose I quite like) and he's so interested in how it all works and fits together I always feel so proud of him. What age did you get your little ones involved, did it work, and did you meet resistance?
RED BEARD
my lad is 5 and he always gets involved when i have any pigeons to breast out (i don't bother with the whole bird) he's been doing it since about four and a half too i suppose. Thunderbird
I really like the innocent way that they tend to approach it. I do tend to tell him that 'mother nature' provides things like this and that we have to be a bit grateful. We also have to be thankful that sometimes daddy can shoot straight! stripey999
My kids were both quite young as I have always said you can't say you don't like something until you have tried it. My daughter at 3 or 4 would help skinning the rabbits and was happy to eat whatever I brought home. She did go off all types of game around 13 - 16 but started a really healthy attitude to food around 18 and now only eats lean meat (so most game). She was over the moon on Wednesday when (thanks to activeviii) she shot her first pigeon and although I was the one to breast it out, she insisted on cooking and eating it. Brown Sauce
Have to say my 2 year old son showed a real interest in helping breast out a duck at the weekend, stood on a chair patting the ducks head. Shame his mother didn't seem to share his fathers enthusiasm and got a cob on!!! Ducking annoying!!! Surfice to say, I'll be actively encouraging both my children to understand where their food comes from and why we should be eating it. TB please feel free to post the pic. Thunderbird
I will mate. My lad did his first pheasant with me yesterday after I managed to bag a couple on Saturday. I made pheasant goujons and he wolfed down a plateful. He's now done pigeon, rabbit, duck, pheasant (and various fish).
