steves4661
My son is hoping to join the RAF soon, he is also hoping to join a local rifle club where he intends to shoot when he comes home at weekends. How does he stand with applying for his FAC? Can he still apply for his FAC through the police force where the family home is and keep his guns in this home, even though he will spend most of his time at various RAF bases around the UK as he gets posted? If anyone has any experience of this I'd be grateful. Thanks folks
Beardo
He should be fine keeping them at home, as it'll only be him who has keys to the safe.
kent
he will have to check but they are often booked into the armoury. Being disaplined for having them in personal lockers has happened (so i am told )
BRAD1927
As above I am in the forces and only go home at weekends :( I just stated on my application that I was in the armed forces and got a letter from the Quartermaster to say that if I required safe storage after a day shooting I could secure them in the armoury. This is not essential but as they say at Asda "Every little helps" On my home visit I had my cabinet checked and the wife was asked if she had access to the keys (she said no)and he was happy. Hope this helps
steves4661
Thanks guys, all very hopeful. In a nutshell then it shouldn't be a problem.
MiLisCer
Steve You need to look at this realistically - he won't want to come home at weekends for long! I am ex-RAF and there is no issue keeping his guns in the station armoury - all he will need is authority - I changed my address on my FAC each time I changed force area, kept things simple. The RAF have a very good target rifle team (let me know if you need a contact) Prior to him applying for an FAC he is going to need to be a full member of a target shooting club (if he is just going to target shoot and not live quarry) - this will take time and he will need to attend regular - once completed he can then apply. Alternatively join the RAF - then join the RAF target shooting association - do his probation with them, then apply for his FAC. stripey999
As MiLisCer said, they can go in the armoury. I am just coming to the end of 28 years in the RAF and have been shooting all that time. He cannot store them in any type of barrack block or married quarters other than overnight at weekends but what they dont know eh (deffinately wouldn't keep then in a barrack block)? When posted, I always made contact with the station armoury and applied to store them there - he can also do this if he decides to rent a private house if the landlord doesn't want them in his property. This is a pain though because you have to arrange to get them out when the armoury is open during office hours and I have had two stocks damaged by overzelous armourers. Having said that, it is the safest place really and would make it easier when answering questions at the licensing interview.
steves4661
Thanks again folks, very useful. Mike I've sent you a PM as a contact for the target team would be useful. Stripey, he's joining as a weapons technician with the intention of specialising in smallarms, so he may end up in the armoury which would be useful. If so, hopefull he'll show a bit more care than some of the armourers you've experienced...!
1in9
I've stored my shotguns in RAF armouries, never a problem. My one top tip is to get yourself a decent hard case for each gun, that way they won't get bashed about in the racks.
cleaner4hire
If he's joining as an armourer he'll be doing his trg at cosford. A mate of mine is shooting there at the moment and has his firearms in the armoury with no real issues.
nicholiath
When i was in the army i used to keep my shotgun in the armoury and used to sign it out when needed
