Rockers
While my mate can call geese right on top of you, I would love to be able to do it myself and despite looking on you tube I really need to watch someone and learn. anyone in london? anser2
Look for the right geese to call at. Usualy on the foreshore its a waste of time to call flighting skiens , but single geese are usualy worth a call and even skiens will sometimes respond to a call in poor light or fog or under the moon. Different inland if you are on a feeding ground. They can be suckers for calling then. One of the best results I have ever had what when I was calling by mouth while my mate was using a caller. With 2 different notes the geese came right in with no hesitation. Every skien we called at that morning , without exception came in. We took 3 each and sat back playing with the pinks by calling them for the next hour. The only problem was creeping down the ditches without flushing the huge skien that had gathered there. For what it is worth I like to call by mouth , but as I get older on a cold morning I now have trouble hitting the right pitch. So I often now use a Haydels snow goose call these days. anser2
Its not too hard to call by mouth, the important thing is to get the right pitch rather than try and do an exact copy of the goose call. I find both greys and pinks come into my call and even on occasion canadas , though it is nothing like a canada call. I guess they mix with grey geese at times so will respond to the call. You cant beat calling to real birds , but do not do it while others are shooting near you. I started when I was a teenager , but these days I find if difficult to get the right pitch in cold weather.
