Mr Rizzini
have been givin a new permission today which has a load of barley fields and in one field there is a pond where the field has never dried up and there is between 20-30 ducks staying about the field morning and night, The farmer said they have been there for years and the numbers seem to be going up and up. what would be your advice on going about feeding and shooting as Im the only person to start shooting it I want to make sure I do it right and maintain it as a good duck spot. I haven't shot a duck yet and cant wait to eat one so I dont wanna ruin this golden egg. All advice welcome on how to start and when etc etc

Mr Rizzini
ask ur farmer if he says its ok for you to go first and shoot the duck the farmer told me about the ducks and then I found out that he has loads of barley which the pigeons feed on from time to time. He has given me the go ahead to shoot anything that my permit allows.

Mr Rizzini
Lucky boy Funny thing is that I sold my duck decoys and caller etc just 2 days ago because I thought I was never going to find anywhere to shoot ducks but this guy is a friend of my dads which I didn't know until he got me to do a few jobs for him yesterday and I seen the ducks on my way into the farm and joked that I would like to eat a few and he said shoot "Do you have a gun?" After I replied yes he said "Well shoot wherever you want as long as you don't shoot me then I dont give a toss". Jackpot me thinks From what I have seen both morning is that in the morning (8:00am) they are sitting on the barley stubble close to the lane and when I stopped at the entrance they take flight from about 15 yards away to a pond about 100 yards across the field so I'm thinking that I may be able to get 1-2 tomorrow morning by sneaking up to the entrance and take them while in flight to the pond Edited December 7, 2012 by Mr Rizzini
silver pigeon 3
If i were you i would head up there in the afternoon and see what flights in on dusk, you may well have a few resident duck but if there is feed around i would not be surprised if more "wild" birds come in on dusk. As for feeding then barley or wheat, as often as you can. Start off with a bucket full and see what/if any is left when you next visit, and then adjust accordingly. Don't overshoot it and it may well give you some good sport Edited December 7, 2012 by silver pigeon

Big Al
Spread feed in the shallows. Remenber a duck has to upend to feed. If it is shallow all over then feed the middle as the ducks will feel more secure from foxes. Also if you feed too close to the edge and the water level drops all you will be feeding is rats. As said before try shooting at dusk. If there are duck on the pond when you arrive resist the temptation to shoot as they get up. They are well established on the splash so will return if not harassed too much. And make sure you dont stay too late. Leave before the flight is over and let the latecomers come in. Shoot only every 2-3 weeks(preferably on windy nights) Oh and well done on securing your permission.
silver pigeon 3
would you reckon for me to spread the food out near the pond or where I see them sitting in the mornings or can I just leave it in the bucket? As Big Al said feed the edges of the water, a little on the bank is ok but to much and you are feeding the rats. Best of luck buddy and let us know how it goes
Mr Rizzini
Cheers lads had a look today at 8:00am and at least 50 lifted from the field and after about 20 minutes they returned to the field, At 2:30 pm on my way home there where about 30 lifted again and circled about. Think I will head down next week someday to see if I can line the dinner plate with 1 or 2 and then I'll leave it for a couple of weeks
Big Al
Best of luck. But be careful - shooting wildfowl is addictive! Even over a flight pond!
