hi all.

im thinking of getting a winch for my 90 defender, only dont want to get one bolted on the front,

someone told me you can get a portable winch that can be bolted on to an attachment plate that goes on to the tow bar.

as i know nothing about winches i was looking for some advice on these winches, decent makes, and anything elde i might need or need to know.

thanks, lee

There are ones that do fit on the towbar, but you need to rig up an electrical supply for them, and then have the winch rattling round in the motor for when it's needed.

Thought needs to be given to what it'll be used for as they are often not very powerful (and be aware the the advertised pull is with one layer of wire on the drum, as it builds up they have much less pull).

If a laden vehicle gets bogged down past its axles in mud then a winch rated at a couple of tons won't do it (though be aware you can double the power of a winch by doubling the rope back using a pulley - as long as it's long enough). However if you just want a little help if you stray into the bad stuff, and you aren't going anywhere silly, you don't need anything as strong, and a towbar winch may do.
