Automatic gearbox specialists!!!!

right it's a pajero 3.0 v6 12v 6g72 automatic mk2 1991 I only bought it a little while ago drove it up from melton mulberry to carlisle and seemed fine then took it to work and found that the overdrive wasn't kicking in and the gear change was sluggish. so I checked the tranny oil and it was a nasty colour and looked like it hadn't been changed in a while, so I thought I would change the oil and give it a good flush. I followed this procedure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsdPAadc9fY and it seemed to work, then the problems started. The gearbox wasn't selecting first, only pulling away in second very sluggishly, then one day drving home from work she died completly, just lost all drive in any gear. So i stopped, turned the engine off and left her for a while, then after about ten minutes started her up and had drive again drove up the road and after half a mile same again got a further 2 miles and hit a hill and no joy what so ever so it was time for the AA towed her home.

 

The next day I was working in my garage and I read somewhere to disconect the battery and that would clear any old faults so I left it off all day at te end of the day connected the battery and started her up and she drove like a dream all the gears etc etc. then the problem came back once she got up to temp.

 

 

So my thinking is firstly I used dexron 11 which I have since found out that is only a get me home option but there are people who use this with no problems at all but I do intend to use ATF SP111 which I will replace the dexron !!

 

secondly I didn't change the filter but here is the thing, I can't find anywhere whether or not the filter in this box a metal Gauze that you need to clean or a replacement filter.

 

I really don't want to spend the money on the oil and a filter before I can get some advice as to whether or not this will cure the problem or are these symptons indicating that the gearbox is past it.

 

local mitsi dealer is a waste of space as they have only had the franchise for two years and not worked on anything this old.

 

 

so there is my long winded story.

Try the mitsubishi pajero shogun owners club web site. Its very good and helpful.

 

Being a 1991 I would be very surprised if your Auto box is ECU Controlled.

Or programmed to your engine.

 

You say the fluid was a bad colour dark brown to black is the clutches inside the box

have burned out and need replacing there`s 3 sets.

The last one I did was £100 a clutch set. The fluid should be a cherry red colour.

 

I can`t see changing the fluid doing much to be honest.

 

From what you have described it sounds like it needs reconditioning sorry bud.

 

The trouble with a scrapyard box is you pay good money and it might not last long.

 

Just had look on ebay there`s lot`s of auto box`s from £100 to £250 some are out of 2.8s.

There is one on there out of a 3.0 pet for £150. Auto box.Transfer box.torque convertor. :good:

the thing is if it was a clutch no matter how long you turn it off for the problem would be there but its not

The clutch sets are multiple disc and theres 3 clutch sets inside an auto box.

The clutches start to slip and gear changes go to pot has the transmission gets to temperature.

Its not like a manual clutch or transmission at all.

It is the clutches slipping that turns the fluid from cherry red to dark brown ( burnt ).

When its cold it may well work but has the fluid and clutches get hot the problems start.

Sums it up Nicely get the old girl out get her overhauled and stick her back in.....job done,Its the sad reality of auto boxes Im afraid

Trouble is a Auto box rebuild with labour and the price of the clutches there won`t be much change out of a £1000 to £1500.

 

Thats a lot to spend on a 91 Pajero in fact its more than its worth.

 

Second hand box for £150 to £200 is the only thing to do.

 

There is one on Ebay Ex low mileage Auto box. Transfer box. Torque convertor. Buy it now £150.
