Gilberts1989
Wish you 2 wouldn't have put those links up, I'm starving watching them lol!! Today I marked the oil drum for the door http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps9c0fe084.jpg Then used a plasma disc on the grinder to cut it out http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps8f218226.jpg I then needed to get it mounted to the frame so I can start working out were I want things. How ever I found that my mig was out of gas and I have lent my arc welder to a friend. Lucky I had a spool of gasless wire. I tacked a piece of rectangular section to each side of the drum. Excuse the welding, I haven't used gasless wire for a few years http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpseb5e46e3.jpg This won't be visible as It will be covered by shelves either side of the drum. Drum mounted ready for next weekend (and a new bottle of gas) http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps7981388d.jpg There is still loads to do on both the drum and frame still, but at least it's starting to take shape
aris
Nice job. I take it you are making a grill rather than a smoker.

Gilberts1989
Nice job. I take it you are making a grill rather than a smoker. It looks like its going to be a grill but its going to have a partition in the bottom to keep the coals to one side, the the food can be over the other side cooking slowly on a low smokey heat. Also there will be a pipe coming from the existing screw type hole that's on the side of the drum. This will go to a old gas cylinder that I will use to burn coals and wood to produce the smoke. Before anyone says anything about using a old gas cylinder being dangerous, there is company's that de-valve and discharge them safely for you
aris
What are you going to do about the orange liner? Burn/sand it out or just leave it?
Gilberts1989
What are you going to do about the orange liner? Burn/sand it out or just leave it? I'm going to throw a load of petrol in it and burn the lot of. It comes off really well like that. It was a drum full of coolant so giving it a burning will do it good to remove any chemicals. Once it's all finished and painted, I will give it a good long burn with wood just to be on the safe side and remove any left over impurities

Gilberts1989
Tonight I started to work on the lid. It needs a over lapping strip to keep the smoke and heat from escaping through the gap around the door. I did this with 2 x 1 meter lengths of 40mm wide, 2mm thick ally strips http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps5c636862.jpg As you can see, this was riveted into place I then marked out to ribs for the door to keep the shape and ridgednes ready for cutting on Thursday. http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps3cd1ee8c.jpg
Gilberts1989
I have also decided that I'm not going to have a cylinder on it as I won't be cold smoking that much to justify it
Gilberts1989
Tonight I cut out the the ribs that I marked out the other night http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps06592b97.jpg And welded them to the lid http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpsb3797a16.jpg These are going to give the lid some suport and stop distortation happening when hot or when opening and closing. All starting to come together now http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps71b12ae5.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps7d23c48f.jpg More to follow on Sunday
Gilberts1989
Had 2 days off this project for a bit of shooting I forgot to take pics as I completed things to day, but here's a few I set about making the grill frame. I wanted a 1/4 of the grill to be made of a solid plate to fry on. http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps1e36227d.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps53ccc3da.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpsd22f5f1a.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpscce2ebdf.jpg

Gilberts1989
Today I tackled the dreded job of stripping the paint off the drum http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpsa85b419f.jpg And set about making the grill http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpsade26251.jpg I ran out of rods though so couldn't finish today. This is where I'm now at http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps5c3f29c9.jpg Soon I will be ready to paint, make shelfs for either end of the drum and at the bottom of the stand and make a handle for the lid
Gilberts1989
Today was the first of many coats of paint to the drum. This is a high heat paint that needs curing once applied. There are paints out there that don't need curing, but they aren't very good when applied to bare metal. It looks a bit **** but once the layers are built up and a better paint gets applied, all will be good. http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpsa16954ff.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpsacafa434.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps54294ca2.jpg

Gilberts1989
That's me all done now ready for some BBQing/smoking http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zpsbdaa9397.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps08ecb7ab.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/null_zps5d6b7f73.jpg I'm waiting for my lid thermometer to turn up from the USA. aris
Very good job. You might want to give it a few burns with no food in it to season it. Just rub the inside down with a bit of veg oil, then put some coals in it and close the lid to let it burn in. Do that a few times. A bit like seasoning a cast iron or black iron pan. Gilberts1989
Thanks, Yeh I was going to burn it tomorrow for the whole day to rid of any nastys like the paint that's inside. It won't be used for a week or too yet while I tie up a few loose ends on it, mainly cosmetic. I know what your on about with the veg oil, I forgot to mention it on here. I've got a well seasoned old wok that I find is better than modern no stick pans
