Lord Geordie
On the way home today I happened to find a heap of cuttings someone had thrown over their fence. In this pile was a near 6 foot section of what looks like Rose! It's approx an inch thick and has big thorns. The bark looks very interesting and I thought would make a nice looking stick. If it IS rose then I assume.it's a few year old to reach this length and thickness. Has anyone used rose for.sticks before and is it OK? Thanks. kent
Yes, dry it well and the bark will come off. Rub the stringy underbark down a bit with fine grade paper exposing a few pale patches, seal with a first coat and rub down with wet and dry between all coats. You will not remove all the stringy bits that poke out prior to the first rub down. Matt varnish gives a great result. I don't think you can save the bark but done as above it makes a cracking stick, flexible to a small degree yet very strong through it and attractive. You will have to trust on the attractive bit it don't look to good when you have the underbark uncoated though looks great in the end
