Daveo26
Can anyone give me a diffinitive answer on this please? I'm trying to find out the correct oils for my gearbox, transfer box and front and back diff on a a 2000 "w" reg terrano I'm fairly sure it's 75w80 gl4 for the gear/transfer and 80w90 for the front diff but is the rear diff LSD? Iv asked at a few motor factors and even rung nissan who say 80w90 front and back doffs but it's all over the tinternet to use LSD oil or an additive HELP is doing my nut in
neil82
easiest way to check is jack both wheels off the ground and turn one, if the other spins the same way, its an LSD, if not use normal gear oils
delburt0
Use gl4 even with a slippy diff you will find this manufacturers recommendations , I was a bit worried about putting gl4 in diff but got told it was correct ,most of the crud from the plates should will be on the magnetic bung , if I remember right the diff takes 3 litres at £6.00 each more you change it cleaner it will get once every 18months is more than enough if you really want to look after it ... Daveo26
Iv gone with what i said can only get GL5 LSD oil so thats going in, it says its specifically for Limited slip diffs as far as i know there is no bronze in the diff to get eaten (if that actually happens). delburt0
Mine didn't actually say gl4 on the bottle it was down as another number ie 10/30 cannot remember the exact numbers though, but I got my motor spares to double check with the distributor what Nissan recommends. Was it 80w90? Thats the viscosity the Gl4/5 bit is the spec of the oil http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectionbodycopy.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7073092 use this in work, does most reg numbers Cheers pal looks like i put the right stuff in. Even Nissan said its normal 80w90 in the rear diff but its actually 80w90LSD oil. The only bit i couldnt do was the front diff as the plug is seized soild, Its made a hell of a difference its quiet now I put a full 5 litres (book says 3.2l) in the gearbox by removing the gear lever and pouring it through the hole. Seemingly if you fill it to the filler plug hole they can run dry on corners and step hills so nissan recommended this method and amount. A tip for the Terrano massive out there. Cheers for the replies fellas

Daveo26
I just tipped it straight into the top of the box after removing the gear stick took about 20 secs to fill Its made a hell of a difference, its sooooo much quiter now. I manage to shift the front diff bung with heat and a long bar, it was sealed with some kind of mastik, possibly from new??? Bit worrying cos it might never have been checked! Yes some of the earlier models you can fill from gear stick hole, but some you fill from the side the box and a pig of a job I have since changed coolant, brake and power stearing fluid so I think that's just about everything changed now lol
