mrmints
As above? I'm really looking for game not clays. I could get a lovely looking 687 for £700 (that I can't try before I buy) or a 686 Silver Pigeon S3 for £900 (a bit too expensive, but I could have a go first). Is shooting an old version of the 687 (before it became a 687 silver pigeon) going to be vastly different to shooting a newer one? Kes
Chris, for what its worth, I have had an old 687 for maybe 15 years now - game gun and quarter and half choke. standard beretta but I had a gel type recoil pad fitted. The gun shoots a lot better than I do but will handle up to 3 " carts. I havent used steel extensively, mainly tungsten matrix for waterfowl. I'd happily buy another. I shoot VIP 6's mainly at pheasant but have dropped woodies at 60 yds quite easily. I havent shot the newer SP type but have never wanted to change the original - its as safe as houses for me - as are all Berettas. As long as you can give it back if its physically damaged, I would say a 687 will be an excellent gun for years to come - I'm keeping mine anyway ! triumphant59
687 should have nicer wood than a 686 with cleaner shaping around he action. Why can't you try before you buy? surely you can handle and check for wear.
magman
Not sure all the older 687 are 3" chambered ? IMHO though the older 686, 687 are a better gun than the silver pigeon
jonesbach
My old 687 sporting isn't 3", its 2 3/4. Not sure if its steel proofed either? That's the only problem with it, other than that, it does a nice job on clays or pigeons:)!
