neil3728
While shooting clays yesterday I had my first ever missfire. Waited a few seconds I then ejected the cartridge onto the ground to my side away from everyone. now this brought a new question, what to do with the cartridge, do i leave it where it is, or do I take it away with me. It was decided that the cartridge must to safe, a good 30 seconds had passed by now. But this got me thinking wghat is the correct procedure when dealing with miss fires. Lord Geordie
Pop it in the other barrel.and.try again. If it don't go off then hand it in the the club house,.they will dispose of it if your not keen to. Personally I cut them open remove the lead and pour the powder into a little cup and bin the primer. The shot can be used to reload and when you get enough powder you can do a wicked genie
fieldwanderer
As you did, if it's rimfire - turn it and try again; they'll often go on the second or third try. It's meant to be thirty seconds before opening bolt / gun I think, I've certainly had a couple that took about 5 seconds before they went. anything else, I've only ever seen them dismantled; pull bullet with pliers or cut shotgun cartridges all the way through with a knife about a third of the way up from the "brass" and remove what's left of the wad to get to the powder. tip it into a little pile somewhere safe and set light to it, quite pretty really On a range or clay ground it's normal to inform the range officer when it happens, don't forget to keep it pointing down range obviously - hold your hand up if possible and shout "missfire" you should then get instructions from the range officer but I wouldn't hold your breath Edited June 17, 2013 by fieldwanderer
