Advice needed.

Recommended Posts

Recently started shooting and have some permission for pigeon shooting. The only thing is I have no dog so it's stopping my from shooting at the moment as I have no way of picking up dead birds as farmer doesn't want me walking in his wheat field etc. Also am a member of a game shooting syndicate so would be nice to have a trained dog in a few seasons time and enjoy watching it work. Here is the problem, I have two jack Russels that are both five year old that I have had from eight weeks they are outside in kennel of a day but allowed anywhere in house of an evening. My wife will not allow another dog in the house here are my questions?

Will my jack Russell's accept the other dog after being the only dogs for 5 years.

Would it be possible to keep a gundog outside all the time in a suitable kennel.

Is it unfair to bring the terriers in of an evening and leave the gundog outside after spending all day together.

Honest opinions please is it going to be an impossible task to keep and train a working dog and then have two other dogs that are just pets. Any suggestions please.

Also what would do better outside Lab or cocker.

Any of the gun dog breeds will be fine living permanently outside as long as they are getting exercised.

The biggest problem with putting a puppy in with your terriers will be that puppys tend to nip and play and will give them no peace , this could turn into the terriers getting the hump and biting chunks out of the pup and things could turn nasty if you are not there at the time .

Can the kennel be separated into two different runs ?

Yes they could be separated could get a separate run until it was older then could have the run of the garden with the other two no chance of escaping as garden has a high wall around perimeter. As for exercise dogs are walked regularly for one to two hours of an evening across fields and local countryside so that is not a problem. Not going to rush into anything going to get this year out of the way and just spend summer reading up and doing research. I know it's going to be hard work if I decide to get a dog I just feel that to get the most out of shooting I would benefit with a dog also would enjoy training etc have always had dogs and love them I think it would be a good addition just want to make sure am doing the right thing.

Because there is a small rough shooting syndicate that four of use shoot its around 500 acres only joined it in January and the person who runs it said to me be careful walking in the wheat as the farmer doesn't like it an ideally a dog is needed. I rent a small area of land off a farmer for parking vehicles and he grows wheat and I spoke to him about walking on crops and he said he has got no problem with a dog going through it reckons it doesn't do that much damage. And Lee to be honest did you not think I thought of that what would be the point of getting one to find out I couldn't use it come on mate am asking advice about a gundog don't want to go down the road of "what makes you think farmer wants a dog running through the crops" the farmers I know mate have got to much to do than to be worrying about a dog running through a field pick a bird up. Plus I don't shoot big numbers so its not going to be in it all day so any damage will be minimum.

I wouldn't put a pup in with your terriers, that's a recipe for disaster if left alone. But in a separate run beside them a young dog will be fine.

I would look at a pup of 6 - 9 months that has already been kennelled and is ready for training, or a part trained dog a little older ready for finishing.

Oh, and when the new dog arrives guaranteed the missus will cave in and it will be in the house with the others, if that is what you decide to let happen.

Thanks for the advice I don't really want another dog in the house myself really any future dogs are to be kept outside as its a lot more practical easier to keep house clean etc also no wiping dogs down every time you been out when it's wet two small dogs is manageable just about but definitely could not have anymore inside as there is just not the room really. Will keep doing my research into breeds etc i think a Lab would be more suitable as think it will be a bit easier to train than a spaniel also may look at doing a bit of wildfowling in future. I love the cockers due to there compact size and looks but think a safer option is the lab considered a springer but I know somebody with two of them and they are a real handfull. As am going to be doing a lot of pigeon shooting I think it will be easier to train a lab to be steady than a spaniel as it will be spending time in the hide I may be wrong tho going to ask about and keep getting advice and speak to differant people.
