Yes is the answer. He can use a club gun, if they have one, under their ground insurance.

 

I should have added that the shooting club would recommend him to apply for his own certificate, after a certain time. At least that's what the clay shooting club that I belonged to, used to do.

Clay grounds (most) have an exemption allowing none cert holders to shoot (totally different set up to a rifle club) you just need to ring the club and ask some insist on an instructor (not a bad idea) other will allow a none SGC holder to go round others with a SGC holder, most will rent guns out for a round and sell carts. For a total novice i recommend a lesson with a coach even if it costs a few quid.
