What a beautiful day

Due to working 7 day a week I very rarely get the chance to take the gun out for a full day, so this bank holiday was booked for a good session. My shooting partner and I had planned to head over to a permission we've got quite a distance from where we live, never really produces much shooting but it's a change from the normal. Always take some decoys but nothing ever seems to be interested in them usually (except the local buzzard)

We'd planned to head over for about 11 (lazy *******) and shoot til I had to leave at 5 for my part time carers job. At half 11 I had a text from my buddy telling me he couldn't be bothered, and there probably wasn't going to anything to make it worth it. Id been looking forward to the shoot so my girlfriend duly stepped in and offered to come with me. She doesn't shoot but happily carries my cartridges round the clay grounds and fancied seeing some pigeon shooting. I loaded the gear up and detoured via tescos to get a 'picnic' to keep her sweet.

Anyway we finally arrived at around 2 and to my amazement the crop had very recently been harvested, and the stumbled looked to have been raked? So we carried half my stuff to the far end of the field, and returned for the rest. We walked no further than 15 metres from the freshly set up decoys and the first pigeon came straight into the pattern. Grabbed the rest of the stuff and hauled it across the field, my size 6 5ft tall beautician struggling with 2 seats, the food bag and a flapper.

We took out place behind the hide, which continued to fall down as the ground was too solid to take the poles, and almost immediately the birds started coming, I was engrossed, my companion however had rolled up her trousers, pulled up her top and sunbathed, screaming occasionally at every wasp coming within 5 metres off her. She started getting in to it too, spotting incoming pigeons well before I did!

The birds kept coming, and while my shooting wasn't the greatest, I started putting birds on the floor. Including one particular bird that I moved to early, spooked further than I would normally attempt, but something just felt right and I took the shot, folding the bird clean at a paced 57 yards.

Had to pack up 2 hours later, 8 birds on the deck and slightly more empties in my pocket. Just as we were leaving we noticed 3 fields across another shooter having a go to, so if you were in Ross on wye today, I hope you had a good time too.

Hope you've all enjoyed my ramblings about a perfect day.

Regards,

Tom
