Terry P
After a couple of attempts at getting under the geese last week with no joy, although I did manage to miss one of those unmissable geese the morning before. I decided to give it a go as it forecast heavy rain, hoping this might put the less determined off I set the alarm for 4 o'clock. To be fair the weather man was bang on. I arrived to find the car park empty and plenty of goose music out in the dark. Magic. I walked to my chosen spot and settled down for the expected wait, the geese were constantly calling and kept me on edge, Mac's ears pricked up and his tail started to thump on the sand, rolling over to see what he had seen I saw a goose heading my way but totally silent, I gave it a quick call more in hope that it would answer and confirm it was indeed a goose, it answered immediately, in a bit of a panic I grabbed the gun and managed to bring it down, Mac proved all the hours I had spent with him was paying off as he swam the river and brought my first goose of the season to hand. After the miss earlier in the week I felt a huge relief. It was all quiet for about half an hour then the geese started flighting out everywhere but over me, just when I thought the place must be empty I moved about 100m and waited a little longer, I heard geese take to be the air from 2 different areas and start heading in my general direction, I soon realised they were both going to cross in front me but to far out, I thought I would get the camera out and just try and film them, but then the fowling fates decided to shine on me, the geese seemed to realise they were going to collide so they both turned and they all headed straight for me, quickly dropping the camera and grabbing the gun I took my time and swung through the first bird and saw it fold to the shot I kept the swing going and was rewarded with another cleanly killed bird, I waited for the satisfying THUMP, THUMP on the sand behind me and allowed myself a massive cheesey grin moment. Mac soon had them retrieved and although a few more chances came my way I just watched.
