Cheap Lamping Set Up for Rimfire or Air Rifle.

I've been working on a new lamping set up to go on my .22LR ready for when I start lamping rabbits this Autumn/Winter. Up to this year I have been using a Lightforce 140 with either a Red or an Amber filter on. The problem being that I wasn't happy lugging the battery about (A 12v 7AH Sealed Battery) and having a coiled wire dangling around with such a large lamp unit on the rifle while I walked about lamping rabbits - I much prefer to travel as light as possible when I do my bunny bashing.

What I have finally got sorted out is a nice very lightweight Cree lamp which has more than enough power for my usage with no wires to get tangled up with.

The torch is an Ultrafire 1800lm XM-L T6 (Zoomable and came complete with a mains and a car charger plus 2X 18650 3,000mAh batteries) this complete torch and package cost £13.85 from fleabay. The rear on/off switch has been replaced with a pressure switch, again from fleabay - A little messing about to fit but it only took me about 30 minutes. To filter the white light i have used an old yellow flip up (Number 3 size) scope cap which I had lying around which is held snugly in place with a small piece of waterproof electrical tape. - This filter does not seem to loose very much intensity from the beam and when "beamed" onto a white wall it looks more like a green than a yellow light, and of course it can be changed to an "unfiltered white light" in less than a second with just the flick of a finger if required. The whole outfit is fitted on the rifle scope with a quick release (screw on) mount which I got from one of the members on here - This mount will also allow me to fit the lamp on to my O/U shotgun in case I ever wanted to use it for (Close range) foxing in an area where there might be problems/safety issues using a centre fire rifle.

This whole set up has cost under £25 in total and should have more than enough light to positively identify and shoot rabbits out to about 80 yards or so, and it weighs less that 1.5lbs when fitted to the rifle, I have yet to try it out in the field so I can not say precisely what the maximum usable range is, I will update this thread as soon as I have tried it. The only down side to this set up is that the torch has 5 modes which I can't seem to over ride, but i can learn to live with that!

OK, I realise that it might not be as powerful as some of these modified Cree Torches that seem to be all the rage now but for under £25 and what little bit of work I have had to do I believe it will do just about all that I require of a lamp for bunny bashing on my .22lr and weighs practically nothing compared to my previous lamp and battery which I will hold on to for using solely on the centre fires when needed.

Attached is a photo of the set up on my Browning .22 "Pumper" which I use for bunny bashing - This rifle might not be the prettiest of rifles but it is a true workhorse and not a "show piece" and it is extremely accurate!
