Kes
I have bought a few auto feeders but mounting height suggests 6 ft to lid (ladders needed to fill). If any of you guys have them, can you give me your experience on the above to save me learning it all the hard way ? Many thanks in advance
scotslad
Been my first year with them too, The higher they are the more spread u'll have from the feeder. Dunno wot height meant to be but i just put them so i can reach a bag from my shoulder, to make life as easy as possible. So prob 5'6" ish. Doubt 6" will make much difference to feeder or pheasants but will make a big difference to u if u have to lug a ladder about as well as feed bags
Kes
Thanks Scotslad - I'd heard that phesants hear the noise of the motor start up and 'make a mental note' and turn up at about the time the thing goes off. A sort of Pavlovs Dog response. I'm thinking of split maize in mine and cutting the crop or placing in pens to get maximum spread and security where the feeders are placed - I agree a ladder would be too much. 5 feet sounds about right but what spread would that give- maybe 4-5 feet radius? Thanks for the help !
scotslad
Will depend on which motor/feeder it is, i tried 2 types 1 throws further than other and 1 is almost compltely silent. Don't want to p **s on ur chips but u might be to late for gettin the pheas tuned in, althou if u have plenty of straw down to get them intrested may work. i tried to ge the pheasants onto them in the pen but not been the success i hoped for, but have had a few teething problems, tried to attach an extra external buzzer to them for atttracting birds from further away but not been wot i had hoped for

Thanks for the help ! Don't go over the top with the maize as once the get a taste for it they will often get a quick fill up on the maize, leave the wheat to go to waste and head off elsewhere looking for more maize. I would literally put 2-3 cupped handfuls of maize to 1 bag of feed. Small amounts will keep them on the wheat and also keep them on your feed rides longer as they scratch about looking for the little golden nuggets.
