Tanning fur

Recommended Posts

Don't faff about with chemicals and buckets of water, use the washing machine.

 

Skin the animal and scrape off all fat and membranes (carefully if it's a rabbit as they can tear easily).

 

Get an old pillow case / duvet cover depending on the size / number of pelts.

 

Stick skins into pillow case with a double dose of biological washing powder).

 

Wash on delicates cycle at 30C.

 

Then wash again with a double dose of softener and no washing powder.

 

Take them out to dry and to get soft leather work in a load of moisturiser or hand cream.

 

Much easier and quicker than traditional methods.

 

Just don't tell the wife.

i have done a few deer and fox but used allum or crome tan

 

never just stuck them in the washing machine ??

 

you got any pics you can send over to me as im intrigued how soft was the hide..

Mrs is in the process of making a hand bag from a fallow skin that we tanned this way, the fur is staying in perfectly but she has not worked the skin hard to soften it as she wanted a more rigid bag in this instance but I don't doubt that if you worked it over an edge to soften it would be just as soft as other methods.
