FrankieM
A friend of mine goes shooting very occasionally and gave me a hare hide earlier this year which I tanned at home in a salt/alum pickle successfully. It was a practice run to make sure the method works. I'm now the proud owner of a beautiful piece of fur with a soft white leather behind. Since he doesn't shoot very often, I was wondering if any of you could give advice on obtaining pelts for home tanning? I don't own a gun so shooting the critters myself is out, but I'd be more than happy to accompany anyone based in the Hampshire/Wiltshire area to fetch, skin & clean kills. Monetary and/or furrier work is offered in exchange. My aim is to make a rabbit fur comforter for myself but I have some other ideas I'd also like to try with furry mammals up to the size of a fox. Unfortunately I don't have the equipment for anything bigger (yet!). Any pointers massively appreciated!

FrankieM
stand by for a windfall. I don't doubt it if this weather keeps up! Seriously though, thanks la bala, you're ever so optimistic! Is tanning something many hunters do to save wastage?

If it is I have no use for it, but I could attempt one especially for you although it might tickle your testicles beyond being pleasurable? looks good to me. steve_b_wales
A very good product for home tanning is available from Snowdonia Taxidermy Supplies. It comes in powder form and you mix it with 2 gallons of warm water. It's simple to use and I have used this product for many years on rabbit and fox furs with excellent results. The solution can be used again, after tanning a fur. Here's the link. http://www.snowdoniasupplies.co.uk/cgi-bin/view_larger.pl?ref=CP0502
