How to obtain pelts?

A friend of mine goes shooting very occasionally and gave me a hare hide earlier this year which I tanned at home in a salt/alum pickle successfully. It was a practice run to make sure the method works. I'm now the proud owner of a beautiful piece of fur with a soft white leather behind.

Since he doesn't shoot very often, I was wondering if any of you could give advice on obtaining pelts for home tanning? I don't own a gun so shooting the critters myself is out, but I'd be more than happy to accompany anyone based in the Hampshire/Wiltshire area to fetch, skin & clean kills. Monetary and/or furrier work is offered in exchange.

My aim is to make a rabbit fur comforter for myself but I have some other ideas I'd also like to try with furry mammals up to the size of a fox. Unfortunately I don't have the equipment for anything bigger (yet!).

Any pointers massively appreciated!

I don't doubt it if this weather keeps up!

Seriously though, thanks la bala, you're ever so optimistic! Is tanning something many hunters do to save wastage?

i think most of us sell our rabbits in the fur, but i am sure someone will help you when they read your post. good luck with your tanning. post some pics. :good:

A very good product for home tanning is available from Snowdonia Taxidermy Supplies. It comes in powder form and you mix it with 2 gallons of warm water. It's simple to use and I have used this product for many years on rabbit and fox furs with excellent results. The solution can be used again, after tanning a fur.
