breeze
Went for a drive about on Sunday to ***** the pigeon situation. As I was watching a few woodies across a field not enough to set up for but I noticed a load of crows prob about 200 ish. They have been about on the fields for a while by all accounts. So the question is what's the plan of attack when it comes to crow shooting? Obviously need some decoys and a good hide!!?
woodfordpigeon
You need to be clever to shoot a lot of crows. They are very smart Birds (go with someone look and listen).Even if you can get them to shot distance its a very difficult bird to shoot. You will always shoot a few but hundreds needs planning and experience. good luck woodfordpigeon Edited January 29, 2014 by woodfordpigeon
RJS1982
I once bagged 28 crows whilst out for pigeon. I always put one crow decoy on the edge of the pattern and come away with one or two. On this occasion they just kept coming (better than pigeon) with a mix of crows, rooks and jackdaws. They have better eyes than pigeon and quite often turn away while out of range so keep very still, even the barrels of your gun above the hide. Also recommend switching to 5 shot as a crow / rook is a bigger bird to bring down cleanly. If you can get one on a flapper that seemed to bring them in for me. Oli383
I have recently be hiding behind a high hedge row and wait for them to all fly back home over my permission, this is easy shooting no equipment really needed except good cammo. Only thing i will note is with some of the larger carrion crows you may want no 5 shot as Ive been using no 6 and have been using a fair few follow up shots. derickr
If you are shooting near a hedge's or some trees put two or three in the hedge's or trees, these act as lookout's for the rest of the birds feeding. This has worked great for us this season, crows seem to come into decoy's with tons more confidence.
TDRsniper
As already explained Corvids have keener eyesight and are more wary so if you are planning to have a day on them spend time blending your hide in with the surrounds. I start with 8 flocked decoys in a random layout ( a couple of pairs) good camo including gloves and a mask/veil and a lot of patience. Once you have dropped one or two get them on flappers, bouncers or a magnet as this brings them in much quicker and with more confidence. The more you drop the more will come in. Good luck
silverhawk
I have an abattoir not far from my permission and always get tons of crows passing. But one sight of you and there gone and the next lot fly a mile high.I found the best was was to set up my hide and gear just before it gets light. As said corvids have very keen eyesight.
