Benellimelody
Any BMW X3 owners/previous owners on here, if so I would appreciate your views I am thinking of changing motors and would like something with light offroad capabilities but decent on MPG and to be predominantly a road vehicle. Been thinking of the above as have heard decent reports (obviously need to get decent tyres on them) The offroad would mainly be farm tracks and fields for when decoying and going round the shoot etc plus driving on snow as get quite a bit up here most years the prices of these seem reasonable.... Hamster
My wife had a 54 plate and later a 07 model diesel six speeds, both superb cars with loads of space and impeccable road manners and particularly good on motorways. They have next to zero off road capability though unless you fit appropriate tyres, neither was a picnic in snow and ice but coped with common sense. She has since had X5's which are even less nimble in the slippery stuff due to greater weight/momentum. The simple answer is to get one and have it fitted with 4 new winter tyres which apparently transform the off road / snow manners without making their presence too obvious on normal surfaces. robbiep
We had an '05 2.0d, manual box. Very comfortable on road, reasonable (40+) mpg, longest day for me was 540 miles, and I got out at the end feeling great, which says it all. However, as an off-road vehicle, it wouldn't be anywhere near my first choice. Going across fields and the like, I'd suggest you really need something with the choice of a low box. Mud plugger tyres will obviously make a huge difference, but they'd only do so much
Benellimelody
Thanks for the replies - would really like one and feel for 95% of my driving they would be fine but that other 5% is fairly important Will keep thinking and maybe go back to thinking of a pick-up
robbiep
Problem with going to a pickup is that unless you put the proper off-road tyres on it, it will get stuck on wet muddy grassy fields. If you do put the proper off-road tyres on it, the on-road fuel economy will be 10-20% worse when doing that 95% of 'normal' motoring The other option is always to get something like an X3 for everyday use, and a cheapie 'proper' 4x4 for the offroad stuff. Things like the Terrano 2.7d are getting pretty cheap, as an example
karlbird
Sorry to thread hijack - but has anyone fitted off road tyres to an X3 - I am thinking similar to the OP between this and a Freelander 2, which I have seen off road with the tyres and is pretty damn good.
