walshie
At optimum angle, it could go as far as about 300 yards. It won't be deadly at that range though.
rem708
I did some testing some years back in preparation for a section 11 exemption. I found std clay shells i.e. 7.5 shot size only managed 150m. Factoring in wind had less effect than expected due to the fairly shallow angle for optimum distance. Here is a couple of links I have stored which might help http://www.shotgunsportsmagazine.com/downloads/shotgun_statistics.pdf http://www.hallowellco.com/shot_size_chart.htm I become a professional beater in the colder months and constantly get rained upon by shot - most of which is 5 & 6. Vertical shot is far less of a problem than shot on a low arc. Although I do wear a hat I've had shot hit my follicley challenged pate and it does sting a little but leaves no marks. Anyone with hair will probably hardly feel it.
