mossberg-operator
So, rape is about 50cm high at the moment, can't really see my decooys in it. Is it still worthwhile do do decoying on it or should I try on the next field with some wheat on it? (My first season) thx, guys!
Cosd
Firstly check with your farmer, he may not want you decoying the rape when it's in flower; Also the birds are probably not doing much damage to it right now and lastly you are going to loose most your shot birds in the crop. Wheat is probably not going to have anything on it at the moment, not until it's yellow and laid. best bet is to go on any drillings if you have any. mossberg-operator
Hi! Farmer wants me to keep shooting them. No drilling. Got a good treeline for roosting. Might try that.
Cosd
In that case, try to raise your decoys above the crop so they are visible, a magnet and or a bouncer will help too. Though the farmer wants you too shoot, always be careful to cause as little damage as is possible to the crop.

mossberg-operator
Been today, just sitting under the treeline in camo+net. No decoys. Had 1 shot, 1 kill. Lovely day, was worth it. 3 pheasants having "fun" under next tree for half an hour, 10m...

Round here they are still feeding in small numbers on rape, in the wheel marks and areas where they have (or the flea beetles have) managed) to keep it short. Decoy them down into the turning marks the tractor has left at the end of each run, where they meet the headland wheel marks you often get a big enough area of short crop for it to work. Mid-late afternoon is when they are busiest round here. Good luck!!
